Volunteer Opportunities
At Fraser Canyon Hospice Society, we recognize and respect that every individual possesses unique skills, talents, and interests. For that reason, we offer a variety of volunteer positions from working with clients to community awareness and maintenance of our deck and rest area. Positions range from short to long-term. No matter what your talents or interests we have a role just for you!
Patient/Client Volunteers:
Visiting Volunteers: provide emotional support to palliative patients and their family members in the hospice setting, hospital, long-term care residence or community.
Vigil Support: If requested, specially trained volunteers can stay with a patient and family around the clock during the last 72 hours of life, when patients are imminently dying.
Companioning: In order to relieve a family member/caregiver, a volunteer may companion a palliative patient by sitting quietly or engaging in activities which the patient enjoys, such as reading, listening to music, playing games, watching TV or a movie, etc.
Bereavement Support:
Specially trained volunteers co-facilitate our Bereavement Support Group for members of the community who have lost a loved one on the palliative program and can also provide one to one appointments.
Caregiver Support:
Specially trained volunteers co-facilitate our Caregiver Support Group for members of the community who provide full-time, unpaid care to a loved one with a terminal or chronic illness or disability. One to one appointments are also available to caregivers of palliative clients.
Complimentary Therapies:
Volunteers who have special training in our relaxation therapies participate/lead our monthly relaxation group and make client-visits upon request.
Fundraising and Awareness:
If you enjoy being out in the community and promoting the work of our Society there are many opportunities for you. In May we hold an Annual Hike for Hospice, our major fundraiser, as well as other events throughout the year such as hot dog sales, raffle tickets, pub nights, meat draws, etc. We also participate in community events such as Brigade Days, our own Celebrate a Life around the Holiday Season, and host information tables at Fall Health Fair, local businesses, etc.
Grounds and Maintenance:
As each season changes, we have opportunities to help outside at our Hospice Society Palliative Deck and Rest Area. If you like to work with your hands and don't mind a little dirt, this could be the place for you.
